A Happy New Year to Care Workers- What Makes the Hard Work Worthwhile?

04/01/2016

All of us at Live in Care Jobs would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every carer for the hard work and contribution that they unselfishly make to society, and to wish you all a very Happy New Year.

We asked on social media what the most positive aspects of the job are for you. We got a lot of responses, many of which are listed or paraphrased below:

Thank you for taking the time to write about your positive experiences.

Helen Maynard:“The wide variety of people we meet, and being ableto hear about some of their life experiences.”

“Many clients have been captains of industry. POW’s,resistance workers. Authors, teachers, proud mothers etc. They comefrom all walks of life.”

The amount of different people who have such wisdom, life experience and interesting anecdotes due to their advanced age surely make those who are capable of expressing themselves excellent companions for carers, as Helen has mentioned.

Deborah Lowe:“On my first live-in-care placement my client had not been involved in many activities outside of the home. She used to go to knitting club, gardening club and community cinema nights. These all stopped when she became too ill to go, or so she thought. Well, we now go to knitting club (even though neither of us knit). We have nicknamed it ‘Stitch 'n' Bitch’, we also go to the Cinema club once a month. Just to see the happy smile on my client's face when she sits with all her old friends and once again feels part of the community makes it all worthwhile. All my best wishes for the New Year to all the carers out there, you all do a wonderful job.”

We particularly like the nickname for the knitting club, which shows the bond that you have with your client. Social scientists also believe that gossip is a sign of a high IQ ;) Judging by what you have written, your client is very lucky to have you caring for them.

Pam Swinbourn“For me caring has empowered me and also tested my patience. Best of all has been meeting some wonderful carers from this site, and others on a more regular basis. I've met lots of clients, their families and made some true friends. I've grown tremendously.”

The sense of altruism and community contribution and cohesion means that many carers share the sense of empowerment that Pam mentions.

John Keenan Hart:‘Happiness’.

Lea Watt: “Working in the care sector can at times include sad or happy moments. Sad when you lose the battle, and happy when you win it. I have lots of experience. The best part is when someone with dementia is thanking you for looking after them so well.”

Many carers report that the gratitude which they get from clients and families makes the job more than worthwhile. As many carers say; it is more than a job or vocation- it is a calling.

Rachel White:“Sitting with my lady holding hands quietly, not speaking just smiling knowing that she feels safe and happy.” x

Happiness is often a two way experience. Carers give so much happiness, and often receive it in equal measure.

CharmzSchnapka:“I can say the best part of being a carer is that you can changed someone’s life.

“Like making them feel the love and genuine care that they deserve by doing simple things that truly can touch their heart. I remember with my lady, she is so lovely and for that I decided to treat her for dinner before I finished my assignment..She loved it she was touched with my gesture and gave me a card before I left..I’m so happy and it really feels good.

“I know as a carer all of us have our own ways to show our lady how special they are, and we are very lucky because we have the privilege to do that..I just wanted to say to my fellow carers ..Keep up the good work! Kudos to you all by doing this noble job! God bless us all! Happy New Year!”

Having the ability to change people’s lives and to be depended on is another aspect of the job that many carers report as making their effort worthwhile.

Diana Dwyer:“That smile off a dementia patient first thing in the morning does it for me every time X”

Lizz Claxton:“Getting the giggles with the person I support”

Ann Hastie Mcneil“When you’re in the middle of assisting with personal care and the service user randomly smiles and says "I love u" . My heart melts!”

Finally, we received a touching letter.

Here is my experience:

I love working as a carer because I can help people who need it.

My starting point is a huge respect toward them, because of lots of life experience and wisdom that they have and they passed all the life moments that we didn’t experience yet.

We can learn from them, and helping them makes them happy and makes it easier intheir old age despite the illness and pain.Thecarer's role is the most important because we can make a huge or small difference in their life. I am proud that am capable of making my client happy, we have lots in common, both of us are animal lovers, love countryside and apeaceful and quiet way of living. We are a good carer-client match and laugh a lot together. My client has a great sense of humor, we even created a little rhyme together. Sometimes deer (animals) come to our garden, so we made a little word game, rhyme, here it is

“Oh dear, oh dear,

Where is the deer?

Well, he was here yesterday,

And today he's gone away!

I made the first three sentences, and my client finished it with a rhyme!

I am sending you our picture. My client and I had a Happy Christmas together, it is a selfie with crowns from Christmas crackers during Christmas dinner. My client allowed me to send it to you !

P.s. I have asuggestion for the next topic to write about, Thatcarers can write how and why they decided to become carers !?!

Kind regards,

MihaelaKovacevic

We sincerely thank Michaela and the rest of you for your heart warming reasons for being carers.

Thank you so much for your dedication.

Happy New Year 2016.
