I am looking for a live in support position as a companion/carer from October 2024. The areas in which I am seeking to be employed in are (preferably) the South or South West areas of England. I am 65 years old, in excellent health with a good sense of humour and a passion for gardening and walking. I enjoy animals, reading and cooking and have great empathy and love for the elderly. For the past 5 years I have been a live in carer with a dear elderly lady who suffered from Alzheimer’s . I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in her everyday life, taking her on outings, working with her in the garden and supporting her in her gentle lifestyle. My role evolved from an initial companion to one of full personal care as her condition gradually advanced. Sadly she has now moved into a care home. I have no encumbrances and am free to travel. I hold a UK passport , own my own car and have a clean UK drivers licence. ...

I am a self-employed living carer and my aim is to work with the clients to ensure that their lives are lived fully and independently as possible in their own environment. I have been a Live- In Carer for the last 7 years, caring for people especially those who are experiencing difficulties like stroke and dementia but before that I worked as a Social Care Assessor my role involved assessing clients care needs. I have cared for my sister who had a stroke which lead dementia. Her early signs of dementia she suffered a memory loss that disrupted her daily activities, difficulty completing small tasks in the house, making plans and solving a problem, confused with places and times, misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps, making poor judgments, withdrawing from social life, changes in mood and personality, forgetting her family members, difficulty to speak or write words, scared to have a conversation, that reduced her level of independence. When my sister went into a supported accommodation I developed an interest in looking after people who had similar condition like my sister. This episode with caring for my sister has given me the opportunity, experience and desire to continue in this role. Caring for my sister taught me a lot, I have become very patient with everything I do, I have learnt to respect others regardless of what they are and do. I am an approachable person, I have the ability to build a good working relationship with staff, clients and their families. I have the ability to deal with difficult situations and challenges. Since I became a Self Employed Live-In Carer I read the clients care plan to make sure that I will meet the standard required for the job before applying i.e. my skills and experience. I have come more reliable and honest as a live-in carer, professional with good time keeping and able to use my own initiative.at all times without supervision. I always do carry out risk assessments ensuring that the clients feel safe, secure, and comfortable in their own home. I have learnt to work hand in hand with other professionals i.e. police, emergency services (ambulance crew, fire brigade), GP, nurses, social workers, family representatives etc and report concerns immediately to my immediate supervisor. I have excellent interpersonal skills and communicate sensitively with a wide range of client groups, setting appropriate boundaries. I am committed to professional development and have a good sense of humor. I listen to a client attentively while he/she is talking since some of them use hearing aid. I also have mental health experience, I have worked with people who have been diagnosed with a mental health illness such as Schizophrenia symptoms, Borderline personality disorder, depression and anxiety, Bipolar disorder, Drug and Alcohol abuse etc. I have the knowledge of Mental Health Act 2005, Mental Capacity Act, and Mental Health Awareness, Dementia, safe guarding and any recent legislation regarding mental health. Key Skills: • Active listening skills using a client centred approach • Ability to deal with difficult situations and challenging clients • Ability to build positive working relationships with clients and their care network • Ability to keep accurate records and reports. • A sound knowledge of equal opportunities, confidentiality & data protection, and health & safety at work • A good team player with a flexible and practical approach to work • Reliable, professional with good time keeping • Able to use own initiative • Respectful of other people’s views, have an interest and motivation to help support people who are older, with mental health, physical disability and learning difficulties in the community. Duties may include; • supporting people with social and physical activities, providing companionship • booking and accompanying people to appointments • helping with personal care such as showering and dressing • assisting people with eating and drinking, shopping, laundry and housekeeping • monitoring individuals’ conditions by taking their temperature, pulse, respiration and weight, and possibly helping with medication. • Providing a personal and practical care service to a client, assisting him/her with getting up in the morning, washing, bathing/showering, toileting, assisting with incontinence. • Assisting the client with mobility problems and other physical disabilities. • Emotional and practical support i.e. moving and positioning. • Carried out risk assessments ensuring the person feel safe, secure, and comfortable in their own home. • Accompanying clients to attend appointments • Develop trusting relationships to support and, enable members to pursue activities & life skills • Prepare and arrange activities in the local community centre. Courses Attended: • First Aid • Introduction to Care (Induction) i.e. dementia awareness, safeguarding • Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons • Handling people with Difficult behaviour • Motivational Interviewing for Drug and Alcohol users • Detecting Drug and Managing Drug users • Risk Assessment / • Mental Health Act/ • Basic Food Hygiene • Fire Awareness • Health and Safety at work • Break Away techniques • NVQ Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care. • Knowledge of PEG Feeding.
