Started caring following the death of my son from cancer in 2013. Have also cared for my late mother (2014) : COPD; doubly incontinent; bedridden for last 18 months of her life; full personal care including hair washing, nails,. etc.
Feel my recent losses make me more empathetic to what may have occurred in clients' lives. Also base my standard of care on whether or not I would like either of my late parents to be treated in a particular way.
Come from a large family, so am able to "cope" with most situations - including client family in attendance, especially during palliative and end of life care. Have some experience with dementia.
Also have a medical background (emergency medicine) and therefore some understanding of, and empathy for, the effects of e.g. stroke/heart condition on clients' lives, abilities, mobility, etc.
