Job Description

The Role: An ongoing with holiday cover or possible rota shared basis, part-time (mornings and evenings) but Live-in ‘Companion Carer’ for an 86-year-old male who has dementia, with its associated issues around memory and personal organisation. Based in the Muscliff area of Bournemouth, near The Broadway restaurant/bar.

The Setting / Care Plan: Our father has all the usual mobility facilities at home, including adapted shower / wet room / separate toilet, stairlift, riser-recliner lounge chairs, walking aids etc. and can get himself up and about on his own, without needing lifting/moving/handling support. He still enjoys trips outside the house on his mobility scooter and he doesn’t need any intimate personal care.

The Duties: What we do need is a person to give dad his pre-sorted and blister-packed medication in the mornings, with his breakfast and again with his evening meals.  Plus to help him to organise himself at the start and end of the day. 

Dad likes simple microwaveable breakfasts and dinner time ready meals, so minimal cooking involved, but he will need help with the washing / tidying up after his breakfast and evening meals.

The Person: This role would suit a mature, caring person - possibly semi-retired or with a full-time day job, who doesn’t mind 1-2 hours at each end of the day with dad (he will still have his current carers visits to get through the main part of his day).

The Qualifications: Professional care experience gained in any care setting, such as live-in carer, domiciliary carer, care assistant, support worker, healthcare assistant in the NHS or similar. OR recent experience of providing care for an adult friend or family member will also be considered.

A driving licence and own transport would be an additional advantage, although not a necessity.

Most important to us is an ability to be caring, provide some companionship and to relate well to an elderly, outgoing, lively, good-humoured, storytelling dad with much still to give and live for!

The Accommodation: A good sized, newly refurbished / decorated, fully furnished en-suite bed/sitting room with TV and Wi-Fi access, with shared use of kitchen / lounge is on offer, in return for some companionship / support as detailed, plus some contribution towards bills/food as appropriate. Any out-of-pocket care-related expenses will be reimbursed.

The Start Date: We anticipate this role would start towards the end of April 2023, or upon completion of the planned accommodation refurbishment if sooner or later.

Background Checks: An enhanced DBS disclosure, ID confirmation, two references and an accommodation agreement will need to be confirmed prior to starting in this role.
